Trucking freight: Will the rollercoaster ride level out soon?
Two headlines in the July 4th issue of Freightwaves caught our attention:
“Volumes up 45% year-over-year this week”
“The freight-rollercoaster continues for trucking”
Both articles noted the extraordinary volume of freight currently flowing in the U.S. “Besides the March demand spike, there has not been freight demand like this in recent history,” one article stated.
Surging demand has bid up spot rates in many markets as shippers try to clear their inventory. Meanwhile, Freightwaves reports, carriers have been rejecting loads at unusually high rates.
A slowdown in demand may be coming in July and August, which are typically slow months for outbound loads, but no one knows what will happen in view of the high volatility we’re seeing during the pandemic.
